Cards
The Cards page shows every Stripe Issuing card on a business's Stripe accounts: who holds it, whether it's Active, Frozen or Cancelled, its spending limit, and what it has been used for.
Everything is read live from Stripe. Owners and admins of the business can freeze, unfreeze or cancel a card, lower its limit, and add merchant blocks at any time. Issuing new cards, adding cardholders, raising limits and lifting merchant blocks are held back during the current beta: the '+ Cardholder' and '+ New card' buttons only appear when card issuing is switched on for you, and platform admins see a notice that new cards are off for members but can still issue them. A business with no Stripe account shows 'This business has no Stripe account yet, so it has no cards' with a link to open one, and an account without card issuing shows 'Card issuing isn't enabled on this Stripe account.'
How to
Freeze or unfreeze a card
- Open Cards from the business page, then pick the card.
- Click 'Freeze card'. The card declines new purchases immediately; purchases already approved still settle.
- Click 'Unfreeze card' to turn it back on.
Cancel a card
- Open the card and click 'Cancel card'.
- Confirm. Cancelling is permanent — the card can't be reactivated, so freeze it instead if you may want it back.
Change a spending limit
- Open the card and click 'Change spending limit'.
- Enter an amount in dollars and choose the period (per purchase, a day, a week, a month, a year, or in total), then click 'Save limit'.
- Lowering an existing limit always works. Raising one, or adding a limit for a new period, needs card issuing to be switched on.
See your card number
- Open your own card. Only the cardholder sees this option — owners and admins can manage a card but never see its number.
- Click 'Show card number'. The number, expiry and CVC appear in a secure Stripe frame; use the copy button to paste the number at checkout.
- Click 'Hide' or leave the page to hide it again. Each view is recorded in the business audit log.
Block kinds of merchants
- Open the card and click 'Merchant blocks'.
- Tick what the card shouldn't be used for — Gambling, Alcohol & bars, Cash & money transfers, Adult services, Tobacco, Travel, Dining, Fuel, Software & ads — and Save. Purchases there are declined.
- Adding blocks always works. Lifting one needs card issuing to be switched on.
Issue a card
- Card issuing must be switched on for you; if you don't see '+ Cardholder' and '+ New card' at the top of the Cards page, issuing is still held back for your business.
- Click '+ Cardholder' and enter the person's name and billing address, if they aren't listed yet. Tick 'This cardholder is me' to accept the Authorized User Terms as you create it.
- Click '+ New card', choose Virtual (works right away) or Physical (mailed to the address you enter, arrives switched off until the cardholder activates it), pick the cardholder and the Business Checking account it draws on, and optionally set a limit.
- Click 'Issue card'. You land on the new card's page.
Accept the card terms
- Open the Cards page and expand the cardholders list ('N cardholders') on the account.
- If the cardholder is you and the terms are outstanding, click 'Accept card terms', read the Authorized User Terms, tick the box, and click Accept.
- If it is someone else, you'll see 'Waiting on cardholder to accept terms'; they have to sign in with the email on the card and do it themselves.
Reference
- Frozen
- The card is switched off and declines new purchases, but isn't cancelled. It can be unfrozen at any time.
- Cancelled
- The card is permanently closed. Cancelled cards are hidden by default; use the 'Show N cancelled cards' button at the bottom of the list (it becomes 'Hide N cancelled cards') to see them.
- Draws on
- Where purchases on the card are paid from. Cards issued here draw on the business's Business Checking (Treasury financial account); a card with no financial account shows 'Issuing balance'.
- Pending
- A purchase the card approved that hasn't settled yet. It becomes a regular transaction when the merchant captures it.
- Waiting on cardholder to accept terms
- Stripe needs the cardholder themselves to accept the Authorized User Terms before their card works. Only they can do it: they sign in with the email on the card, open Cards, and click 'Accept card terms'. If you're adding yourself as a cardholder, tick 'This cardholder is me' to accept as you create it.
- Stripe needs info
- Stripe needs more details about a cardholder before their cards will work. Hover to see which fields.
- Blocked merchants
- The kinds of merchants the card declines, shown on the card page. 'None' if no blocks are set; categories set outside QLife Money show as '1 other category'.
