Catch-Up

Catch-Up is built for clearing a backlog — the classic 'I found a year of old bank statements and now have hundreds of loose transactions' situation.

Instead of categorizing one transaction at a time, it groups everything uncategorized by merchant, so a single decision tags every transaction from that merchant at once (this year and automatically going forward, via a merchant rule). Pick an entity (Personal or a business) and a year; the merchants with the most uncategorized transactions rise to the top, so you knock out the biggest chunks first.

How to

Clear a year's backlog

  1. Choose the entity and year at the top. You'll see how many uncategorized transactions remain and how many distinct merchants they span.
  2. For each merchant, pick the right IRS category from the dropdown (Schedule C lines for a business, Schedule A/E for personal).
  3. Click 'Apply to all N'. Every transaction from that merchant is categorized at once, and a rule is created so future ones categorize themselves.
  4. Work down the list; the count shrinks as you go.

Handle tricky merchants

  1. If you're unsure how to categorize a merchant, open the Transactions page.
  2. Use its AI assistant — it knows what each of your businesses does and can propose a category by conversation, which you confirm.
