Tax Center

The Tax Center organizes all of your finances for taxes by filing entity and by year.

It opens on a grid: your filing entities — Personal, plus each of your businesses — run down the side, and tax years run across the top. Each cell shows a status dot (filed, in progress, has activity but not started, or nothing yet) and, when the year has activity, a computed net figure. If you have no tax years yet, the page says so and asks you to categorize some transactions or upload a prior-year return to the Shoebox. Each cell is a link: clicking it opens that entity-year workspace as its own page (with its own address you can bookmark or share), where QLife Money automatically computes income and deductions from the transactions you've already categorized — Schedule C lines for a business, Schedule A lines plus income for personal — rather than making you type figures in by hand. Prior-year tax returns you upload to the Shoebox are recognized automatically and appear in the grid under the correct entity and year.

How to

Open an entity-year workspace

  1. On the Tax Center grid, find the row for the entity (Personal or a business) and the column for the tax year.
  2. Click that cell. The workspace opens showing computed Total Income, Total Deductions, and Estimated Net at the top.
  3. Below that: an Income line, Deductions grouped by IRS line (with the Schedule C or Schedule A line reference and the number of transactions), and any uncategorized remainder.
  4. Click '← Back to Tax Center' to return to the grid.

Finish categorizing so the numbers are complete

  1. In a workspace, look for the amber 'uncategorized transactions' banner — it counts transactions in this entity and year that don't yet have a tax line.
  2. Click 'Categorize' to jump to Transactions, where you can assign each one an IRS category (which places it on Schedule C or Schedule A).
  3. Return to the workspace; the deduction totals update to include the newly categorized transactions.

Start a return and track its status

  1. Open the entity-year workspace. If no return exists yet, click 'Start [year] return' — the computed income and deductions are prefilled.
  2. Once a return exists, the workspace shows a computed-vs-return comparison, any documents attached from your Shoebox, and status buttons.
  3. Click a status button — Draft, In Progress, Ready To File, Filed, Extended, or Amended — to record where the filing stands. The grid cell reflects the new status.

Reference

Entity
A filing entity — 'Personal' for your individual return, or one of your businesses. Personal transactions map to Schedule A; business transactions map to Schedule C.
DBA rollup
A business marked as a DBA of another entity (same EIN) does not get its own column here — its income, deductions, and net roll up into the parent entity's cell, which is captioned with the DBAs it includes (e.g. 'VGM LLC · incl. QVegas'). Set this on the business's Tax Profile card under My Businesses.
Grid status dot
Filed or Amended (✓, green); a return in progress (● — Draft muted, In Progress and Extended yellow, Ready To File cyan); has activity but no return started yet (● yellow — a nudge to begin); or nothing yet (○). Hover a cell to see its status. The legend under the grid reads Filed, In progress, Has activity — not started, and Nothing yet.
Computed rollup
Income and deductions calculated live from your categorized transactions for that entity and year — deductions grouped by IRS line. Income is derived from inflow transactions and is best treated as an estimate.
Estimated Net
Computed income minus computed deductions for the entity-year; the grid shows it under the dot as 'Net'. For a business this approximates Schedule C net profit.
Uncategorized
In-scope expense transactions for the year that don't yet have an IRS category, so they aren't counted in any deduction line. Categorize them to make the rollup complete.
Status
The stage of a return: Draft, In Progress, Ready To File, Filed, Extended, or Amended.
