Envelope Budget

The Envelope Budget page is a zero-based, YNAB-style alternative to the Budget & Forecast page.

Instead of comparing actuals to a fixed plan, you give every dollar of your income a job by assigning it to spending categories ("envelopes") one month at a time, until the To Be Budgeted figure at the top reaches $0. Each month has its own set of budgeted amounts; you can move between months with the arrow controls. The page is personal-scope only. It reads a month's rollup from the envelope-budget endpoint and saves each category's budgeted amount and carryover setting as you edit them.

How to

Budget a month to zero

  1. Use the ← and → arrows to select the month you want to budget.
  2. Look at the To Be Budgeted figure at the top — green means you still have money to assign, red means you've assigned more than your income.
  3. For each category, type a dollar amount in the Budgeted field and press Tab or click away to save it.
  4. Keep assigning until To Be Budgeted reads $0.00.

Add a category

  1. Click '+ Add category'.
  2. Enter a Name (for example, 'Groceries').
  3. Optionally enter a Group to organize related categories together (for example, 'Everyday').
  4. Turn on 'This is an income category' if it represents money coming in, such as a paycheck.
  5. Click 'Add'. The category appears in its group and is ready to budget.

Carry leftover into next month

  1. Find the category whose unspent balance you want to keep.
  2. Turn on the Carry toggle at the right end of the row.
  3. Any leftover in that envelope will roll forward into the same category next month instead of returning to To Be Budgeted.

Hide or delete a category

  1. Click 'Manage' beneath the category name.
  2. Type 'hide' to keep the category's history but remove it from the list, or 'delete' to remove it permanently.
  3. Confirm the deletion if prompted.

Reference

To Be Budgeted
Your income for the month minus everything you've budgeted so far. Shown in green when positive (money left to assign) and red when negative (over-budgeted). The goal of zero-based budgeting is to drive this to $0.
Budgeted
The dollar amount you've assigned to a category for the selected month, edited inline. Saved automatically when you leave the field.
Spent
The total outflow from the category's matched transactions during the month, shown as a positive figure in pink.
Leftover
Budgeted minus Spent for the category. Green when zero or positive (money remaining in the envelope) and pink when negative (overspent).
Carry
A per-category toggle. When on, any leftover in the envelope rolls forward into the same category next month instead of returning to To Be Budgeted.
Income category
A category flagged as income (like a paycheck). Income categories increase the money available to budget rather than being spending envelopes, and appear grouped under Income at the top.
